DOMESTIC. In one year, 61,000 people have died from the "extreme heat" in Europe, TT reports. What TT does not report, however, is that every year ten times more people die from cold than from heat in Europe.
TT further writes that the worst excess mortality that has hit Europe as a result of the extreme heat occurred in 2003 when over 70,000 people are said to have "died of heatstroke", according to TT.
But according to a study of excess mortality in 854 cities in Europe, only 20,173 individuals died as a result of extreme heat over 20 years.
In contrast, 203,620 people died in these cities as a result of extreme cold, according to the study, which was published this spring in the British scientific journal The Lancet.
