MEDIA. A man with an Arabic name has been arrested for shooting dead three people in Rotterdam last week. Now the media - which instead singles out the man as a "neo-Nazi" due to anti-Semitic comments - are accused of obscuring his background.
The man - identified in the media as "Fouad L" - was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of first shooting dead his 39-year-old neighbor and her 14-year-old daughter. He then allegedly set fire to the apartment.
After the double murder, the perpetrator made his way to Erasmus University in Rotterdam, where he murdered a 43-year-old professor. He also threw Molotov cocktails into the building and set fires in several places.
Shortly after the crime, users on social media began to question why the media was so tight-lipped with information about the arrested man and his background.
The man was then identified in the media as "Fouad L" – which is an Arabic name. But no description of his ethnic background has been released.
At the same time, it is claimed in the Dutch and in a number of British media that Fouad would be a "neo-Nazi". As proof of this, it is stated that on the forum 4chan he is supposed to have expressed himself anti-Semitic and derogatory about Africans – views that are not exactly unusual among Arabs.
The Dutch government fell earlier this year over the immigration issue, and Prime Minister Mark Rutte resigned.
"Given the growing opposition to mass immigration in the Netherlands, the media and the political class may have a strong motive to conceal details of the man's foreign background while linking Fouad L to right-wing movements," notes the media-critical site Remix News .
