Officials Have Silly Request For Residents Of Bend, Oregon… And It Involves Googly Eyes

Bend, Oregon, residents have been having a little fun by adding googly eyes to sculptures. The city has a series of outdoor Corten and stainless steel sculptures designed to rust over time with exposure as part of the “look.” The googly eyes are affixed with an adhesive backing, which can damage the sculptures. Although the city “doesn’t condone” Santa hats and wreaths, those don’t cause permanent damage to the sculptures. The request to cease placing googly eyes around Bend included a subtle hint about the Santa hats and other non-damaging seasonal adornments. So far, the city states it has incurred more than $1,500 in expenses to clean the adhesive from the sculptures, according to spokesperson René Mitchell. The comments on Instagram tell us the residents enjoy the googly eyes. They would like Bend officials to leave them in place. Comments include statements like, “Googly eyes keep my mental health in a good place. LONG LIVE GOOGLY EYES! ” and “But they are so so funny!!!” Other comments say the “art” in Bend wasn’t real art until the googly eyes appeared. Image from Instagram. The sculptures are part of the city’s “Roundabout Art Route.” They appear in the center of several roundabouts around the city. The residents of Bend have been decorating the sculptures since their installations. Defacing the sculptures is considered vandalism and we certainly don’t condone it, but the end result is quite humorous. The damage is minimal and the citizens are enjoying it. Perhaps the googly eyes bandits and city officials in Bend can settle on a middle ground in the future. Please share if the googly eyes made you smile.
