“Is This Some Kind Of Parody?” – Fans Have Mixed Reaction To Portrayal Of Johnny Cash In New Teaser For Bob Dylan Biopic, ‘A Complete Unknown’

Coming soon. I'll be honest, I've never been a massive Bob Dylan fan, and I don't really know his catalog very well, but I do know what a big deal he was in the '60s and beyond, and how important he is to the fabric of American music as a whole. He's beloved by fans to this day, and soon, they'll get to see his life on the big screen in the new biopic titled A Complete Unknown, which stars Timothée Chalamet as Dylan and was directed by James Mangold (who also directed the 2005 film Walk the Line about the life of Johnny Cash). A Complete Unknown is due out in theaters Christmas Day, and as the Searchlight Pictures YouTube page describes it, goes like this: "New York, 1961. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. He forges intimate relationships with music icons of Greenwich Village on his meteoric rise, culminating in a groundbreaking and controversial performance that reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A COMPLETE UNKNOWN, the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history. The film also stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie." Of course, country music fans like me will be especially intrigued to see the portrayal of Johnny Cash in the film, and he is played by Boyd Holbrook. The two music legends, Dylan and Cash, were friends for over 40 years, meeting early in their respective careers. In his book Cash: The Autobiography, Johnny wrote about being a fan of Bob Dylan before they ever became friends: "I had a portable record player that I’d take along on the road, and I’d put on 'The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan backstage, then go out and do my show, then listen again as soon as I came off. After a while at that, I wrote Bob a letter telling him how much of a fan I was. He wrote back almost immediately, saying he’d been following my music since ‘I Walk the Line,’ and so we began a correspondence." The rest, as they say, is history, and as of a few days ago, we have our first extended look at Johnny Cash in the movie. Check out the preview clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZKwcp3Eurg Of course, fans had a mixed reaction to both actors in this scene in the comments section under the video, honestly, with some loving the true vintage look of the movie, and others taking issue with the way the music icons are being portrayed: "Both of them look so cool and those cars are gorgeous." "I love the fact they've made it look vintage with grain. Also Boyd Holdbrook as Johnny Cash looks great." "‪I’ll bet Mangold felt a real sense of nostalgia filming the Johnny Cash scenes‬." "I wish James Mangold brought back Joaquin Phoenix for Johnny Cash. It would have been awesome." "Is this some kind of parody?" "Music biopics are so corny, please make it stop." "This looks horrible holy sh*t." "This is my avengers film, this is my marvel universe." "I feel like this is the false scene Dylan was talking about." "This movie is gonna suck. Dylan doesn't need a biopic. His music and his legend are far above this money grubbing, Oscar baiting bullsh*t." "Can't wait to see this in cinemas." "This film is so silly I’m not going to watch it - Baez didn’t write blowin in the wind, Baez and Dylan never sang girl from north country together live and Johnny cash wasn’t an asshole who destroyed people cars" "God, Boyd is so good." This is only one small part of the movie, so I'll save my judgment for after I see the whole thing, but I'm not so sure about this one, we'll see... A Complete Unknown is due out in theaters on Christmas Day, December 25th. Here's the full official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdV-Cs5o8mc
