Zach Top Surprises Denver’s The Grizzly Rose With Guest Appearance From Billy Strings

That's some good ole bluegrass pickin'. Zach Top pulled out all of the stops for a Denver crowd last night when he surprised the Grizzly Rose crowd with a very special guest: the one and only Billy Strings. This is a duo I will never get tired of. This is not the first time we have seen Zach Top and Billy Strings perform together, and I pray it's not the last. Ideally, I'd love to get a single or record from this collaboration one day, as Zach Top has an extensive history as a bluegrass player. Before penning tunes with his signature '90 flair, Zach Top was flat pickin' with his family band, who traveled to local bluegrass festivals for roughly ten years of his childhood. The band was composed of Top and his three other siblings, and while it was fun for them to have a family band from an early age, it was clear that Top was himself doing this for a long time versus his siblings, who saw it as a fun side hobby. “Yeah, we ran around 10 years. Luckily, I didn’t ruin any relationships with my siblings ’cause I remember having… we had some brutal band practices. I was definitely the one that wanted it really bad, and I’d sit down there and play guitar three hours a day and then try and get them to, you know, do a little band practice for whatever show we had coming up or something. I was definitely an unpleasant little tyrant a lot of times, I’ll say.” Since Top spent hours a day playing guitar, he made him quite the player. This story sounds similar to Billy Strings, who spent most of his free time playing guitar, honing in on his craft, and even admitted he's played for 48 hours straight the first time he smoked meth. Not a recommendation... just a fact... These two men have put in the work, and their picking skills reflect that. When Billy Strings and Zach Top get together, you know it's going to be magic. The first time we saw the two of them hit a stage together was last summer at Under The Big Sky when they performed the classic bluegrass tune “Freeborn Man” by Jimmy Martin. Fast-forward to late Fall/early Winter, the two teamed up again for a sensational Apple Music Session. They performed two songs from Top's debut country record, Cold Beer & Country Music, and the Ricky Staggs tune “Don’t Cheat in Our Hometown." To say fans could not get enough of this duo after the release of this session is an understatement. Top's classic country sound combined with the flat-picking style that Strings lays down is a match made in heaven. https://www.instagram.com/p/DB1T0YLvpRS/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_video_watch_again Thankfully for fans, the Apple Music Session was not the end of their run performing together. Last night at Denver's Grizzly Rose, a great country music venue in the Mile High City if you haven't been, Zach Top surprised the crowd with an appearance from the Michigan native. Top is in the thick of his first headlining tour, celebrating the music of his debut record, but he's shown thus far that he's making sure these shows highlight all the facets of his dynamic sound. In Denver, he reminded fans that he's more than an artist reviving the classic country sound, bringing out his friend Billy Strings to perform "Freeborn Man" again. The two also performed Top's track "Bad Luck" and threw in some incredible solos. Both Strings and Top lit the stage on fire with their shredding. It's melt-your-face-off good.
