Stone Temple Pilots Best 10 Songs

Vocalist Scott Weiland met bassist Robert DeLeo at Black Flag concert in Long Beach, CA. The meeting led to the formation of Mighty Joe Young and Shirley Temple’s Pussy (that was a lawsuit waiting to happen) before becoming Stone Temple Pilots (STP), with Robert’s brother Dean on guitar and drummer Eric Kretz.   #10. Sex Type Thing The band’s debut single is credited as the single factor that helped make STP a contender in the Grunge era. Released in’93, the song is from their debut studio album, “Core.” Sex Type Thing #9. Lady Picture Show Frontman Scott Weiland wrote in his memoir, “Not Dead & Not For Sale,” the song is “about the horrific gang rape of a dancer who winds up falling in love but can’t let go of the pain.” Weiland was the throes of heroin addiction when he wrote the lyrics which is why the subject matter is so morose. Lady Picture Show #8. Big Bang Baby In another quote from “Not Dead & Not For Sale,” Weiland wrote that for “Big Bang Baby,” “we wanted to deconstruct, go low-tech, get to the dark heart of the matter. I was happy to write lyrics that didn’t need to make sense.” Big Bang Baby #7. Wicked Garden The lyrics are about lost innocence and longing for youth. Never released as a commercial single it was a concert favorite. The song’s lyrics were written by Weiland and the music was written by brothers Robert and Dean DeLeo. Wicker Garden #6. Between The Lines “Robert (DeLeo) was thinking the Animals or Zombies, a ’60s go-go beat and a girl in a miniskirt,” explained Dean Deleo. “Sometimes we don’t feel musically what Scott does lyrically. He took it to an exciting place. It’s pretty twisted.” Between The Lines #5. Trippin’ On A Hole In A Paper Heart The music was predominately written by drummer Eric Kretz while the lyrics were by Weiland, who stated they referred to a “very bad experience dropping acid. Trippin’ On A Hole In A Paper Heart #4. Vasoline Weiland has said the song “is about being stuck in the same situation over and over again. It’s about me becoming a junkie. It’s about lying to my first wife and lying to the band about my heroin addiction.” Vasoline #3. Creep Written by Robert DeLeo, the third and final single from the band’s debut album, “Core,” peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart. Creep #2. Plush  The song became the band’s first single to top the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart and went on to become that listing’s #1 song of 1993.  Weiland had said that the song’s lyrics are a metaphor for a failed relationship. Plush 1. Interstate Love Recorded during sessions for the “Purple” album in Atlanta, Weiland was able to complete his vocals for the song in one take, He said the lyrics were about the troubles he was having with his girlfriend at the time. “The words are about the lies I was trying to conceal while making the “Purple” record.” “Interstate Love Song” reached #1 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks. Interstate Love Song BONUS TRACK: Out Of Time (with Chester Bennington) When the band could no longer deal with Weiland’s drug abuse, they kicked him out. Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington stepped in. His run with the band was short-lived when he was not able to effectively handle his business (STP/Linkin Park) and personal demands. But before that occurred the band produced “Out Of Time” which topped Billboard’s Mainstream Rock tracks. Out Of Time ### The post Stone Temple Pilots Best 10 Songs appeared first on RockinTown.
