Specialized Car Keeps Migrating Christmas Island Crabs Safe From Road Crossings

Christmas Island, off the coast of Australia, has the nickname “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean.” The small island has abundant wildlife, including sea birds, red crabs, and whale sharks. The annual crab walk sees 60 million red crabs migrate from the forests to the coast. To keep the crabs safe, many vehicles on the island have modifications to become “crab-safe cars.” The modified vehicles have special flaps installed in front of all four wheels, like reverse mudflaps. The flaps are hard rubber and drag on the ground. As the cars move forward, the flaps push crabs off to the side where they are safer. The crabs migrate yearly to lay their eggs in the sea. Although the crab-safe cars don’t save all the crabs, they prevent many from flat-lining. There is no set design for the after-market crab flaps, but Chris Bray is behind the original concept. This incredible human being built the lodge with his own two hands! Chris has an innovative approach to life and dedicates his efforts to making a difference without creating more environmental problems. Christmas Island is experiencing increasing tourism. The island has incredible coral reefs and abundant marine life surrounding it. Snorkelers and divers love the clear waters for daily adventures. The waters are warm year-round, and the island has over 60 dive sites. Whether you want to be active or relax on Christmas Island, there are activities to match your desires. The island is a beautiful place to spend your vacation fishing, seeing rare birds, or exploring. Please use caution driving during crab migration season and enjoy your trip.
