Ron Howard Remembers His Late Mother On Her 98th Birthday

Ron Howard honored his mother, Jean Speegle Howard, on the first day of February, which would have been her 98th birthday. The director shared a heartfelt tribute alongside a throwback photo of her as he reflected on her unwavering support throughout his life and career. Jean was also in show business as an actress and passed away in 2000 at the age of 73. Ron described her as a determined, hands-on woman who could do anything. Thankfully, she was a good example to him, and he has her to thank for some of his success. While she had a flourishing career in acting, she dedicated most of her time to ensuring Ron and Clint had a stable upbringing. Her support extended beyond the home, as she actively contributed to Ron’s creative projects — from acting in small productions and assisting with stage plays to helping behind the scenes. One memory that stood out for Ron was how she painted and then repainted an apartment hallway to help with the set for his teenage film project. As he became a father himself and witnessed Jean battle health challenges, he began to acknowledge the sacrifices she made and how much strength she showed. Conversations with his father revealed just how much Jean had shaped their lives, especially in encouraging their belief in their entertainment pursuits. Ron has very few regrets in life, but this one about not showing his mother just how much she meant to him tops his list.
