“They’re Closing The Border” – Luke Combs Was Hammered With Ed Sheeran In England The Night Before COVID Was Announced

Where were you when the world shut down? If you ask Luke Combs, he’d happily tell you that when the COVID lockdown began and America started shutting down its borders… he was outside of the states. Specifically, he was at singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s place outside of London, England. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes Australia (I didn’t know it existed either, it’s okay), Luke Combs was initially asked about his collaboration with the English singer. Back in 2023, the country singer and Ed Sheeran teamed up to release “Life Goes On,” which was featured on Sheeran’s fifth studio album Subtract. And it’s funny that’s the name of the song they went with considering Combs and Sheeran were together when life came to a screeching halt. Combs explained in the interview that the pair have known each other for five or six years, and the country star described Ed Sheeran as “the best.” Luke Combs also described the crazy and somewhat hilarious situation when he and his wife found themselves at Ed Sheeran’s home – intoxicated – right around the time the COVID lockdown began: “I was actually at his house when COVID started. In the sense of like, I was at his house outside of London somewhere… middle of nowhere. We’re about to start a tour in the United Kingdom like two days after that. So I had gone there… we had already played two shows. We had played in Berlin and Amsterdam, I think, then had four or five days off. So I was gonna go to his house and write some songs with him. It was the first night I was there, me and my wife were there actually. We were just… hammered. I’m gonna be honest with you. We were absolutely crushed. It’s Sunday, we’re having the whole Sunday roast thing and he’s got this pub going and we’re just ripping drinks.” In Comb’s drunken state, he received a very important call from his manager. Despite the small party going on and the inordinate amount of alcohol he had consumed, the “Hurricane” singer decided to answer the phone. That’s when he got word that the world – and specifically America – was about to lock down, and that they all needed to get back to the states as soon as possible: “I get a call from my manager back in London. It’s like two in the morning, it’s late and we’re still up. He’s like, ‘Hey man, I just got a call from my buddy who does something in the government.’ He was like, ‘Tomorrow, they’re going to announce that they’re closing the border to the United States. I bought us all plane tickets for like 6 or 7 in the morning.’ I was like, ‘This is not good.’ I had to go and pop in and break the news to everybody, like ‘Hey, world’s shutting down. Life’s over boys, might as well get hammered.’ Didn’t feel too great in the morning, getting in the car at 6 a.m. to get back to the States. But it made for a good story.” Can you imagine being drunk at 2 a.m. and getting a phone call of that importance? Like Luke says, it all makes for a great story now… but I’m sure that was slightly jarring to be drunk at Ed Sheeran’s house thousands of miles away from your own home, and being told that you’ve got to get back to the United States because something unprecedented was about to happen. That, as they say, is some crazy sh*t. And you can hear Luke Combs talk more about it in the interview below: The post “They’re Closing The Border” – Luke Combs Was Hammered With Ed Sheeran In England The Night Before COVID Was Announced first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
