Pixies built their reputation on jagged guitar work, unpredictable song structures, and an ability to shift from eerie quiet to explosive chaos within seconds. Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986, the band was the brainchild of Black Francis (vocals, guitar) and Joey Santiago (lead guitar), who met while attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A newspaper ad brought in bassist Kim Deal, the only person to respond, and she recruited drummer David Lovering to complete the lineup.
