Few Hollywood stars have been more reliable in spewing left-wing talking points than comedian and talk show host Bill Maher. Through his “Politically Incorrect” and “Real Time” TV series, he has amplified countless issues prioritized by the Democratic Party over the past several decades. But since he’s been increasingly willing to call out the absurdities of the left, some of his former fans have turned against him. And after sharing a generally positive assessment of his recent visit with President Donald Trump at the White House, he’s being inundated with opprobrium from some of his fellow left-leaning celebrities. As Breitbart reported: “I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him. And, honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump. That’s just how it went down, make of it what you will. Me, I feel it’s emblematic of why the Democrats are so unpopular these days,” Maher added. Celebrities criticized Maher for what they characterized as giving Trump the PR stunt he wanted. “Don’t overanalyze Maher prostituting himself to Trump. Maher works for the same fascists at Warner who took over and corrupted CNN. I’ve known Bill since 1978. He was a shameless opportunist with no real principles then and he remains so. This is so he can keep his HBO show,” Keith Olbermann said on X. Olbermann was far from the only high-profile hater who came for Maher: Here’s what Maher is not: a person of color, a woman, gay, trans, an immigrant, Muslim, on Social Security & Medicare/Medicaid, disabled, the working class. Libs are big mad that Bill gave the time of day to Trump. pic.twitter.com/QPnbVb4xAB — Justin Hart (@justin_hart) April 12, 2025 NewsNation‘s Geraldo Rivera aired some dirty laundry, referencing Maher’s apparent change of heart since a conversation they had about Trump years ago: Appearing on “NewsNation Prime” over the weekend, Rivera was at a loss to explain Maher’s turnaround and said it was hypocritical. “He told me very specifically that the reason I like Trump is because he’s nice to me. I mean, he really was very insulting, Bill Maher was,” Rivera said. “He challenged my judgment. He mocked my feelings for the president.” Rivera agreed, however, that Maher’s goal of lowering the temperature in political discourse is a worthy one. “We don’t have to attack, we don’t have to disparage, we don’t have to put down,” Rivera said. “I am not upset that he’s come around.” He also said, “I love the jokes in late night… There’s truth in that criticism.” Here’s some additional coverage of the backlash Maher has received from the left:
