Back in 1987, Microprose put out Airborne Ranger, a military action game that included light strategy elements. In the decades that followed, its combination of tactics and direct combat were picked up and spun off into different strategy subgenres, resulting in everything from Firaxis' XCOM games and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint to Insurgency: Sandstorm and Arma 3.
