Tyler Childers Surprises Kentucky Crowd With First “Jersey Giant” Performance In Years
Pulling out a wild card for his home state crowd.
Tyler Childers did the unthinkable last night during his show in Lexington, Kentucky. He performed a song that many thought he had hung up for good: “Jersey Giant.”
“Jersey Giant” is one of those unreleased gems that some fans still hold out hope he will release one day. Although we have artists like Evan Honer, Sam Barber, and Elle King who have shared their stellar takes on the single, nothing hits like the real head singing the lyrics of the song. However, unlike “Her and the Banks,” “Jersey Giant” was one of those unreleased gems that Childers often leaves out of his setlist.
Since Childers got sober and hit the road again, some fans have been upset that classics from his catalog like “Jersey Giant” and other hits like “Feathered Indians” have been left off his setlist. Although Childers has not entirely ruled out all of his hits, since getting sober, it’s clear that certain songs no longer serve him. However, he still does the classics like “Lady May” and “Whitehouse Road,” and if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll get to hear “Shake The Frost” or “Nose To The Grindstone,” but “Feathered Indians” is few and far between these days.
Just like “Feathered Indians,” Childers acknowledged that “Jersey Giant” was in that same realm of not serving him anymore when Elle King released her cover, sharing with fans:
“I wrote ‘Jersey Giant’ over ten years ago and only performed it for a short period of time. I was pleased with how it turned out structurally (it even has a bridge, which is rare for me), but I was over performing it pretty fast.
I reckon that’s just how songs go sometimes. They can be like that coat you saw and had to have, only to get it home and think, ‘Why, gah, I ain’t never gonna wear this thing.’ Or, one that you got from an ex which you would rather just toss out.
But that’s not saying anything against the coat, it just doesn’t fit me anymore and hasn’t for some time.”
Given this, fans were left with their jaws on the floor when he struck up the introduction of “Jersey Giant” last night at Kroger Field. Fans quickly began to pull out their phones to capture the moment, knowing how rare it was for Childers to feature this on the setlist. One TikTok user, Autumn_dakota, quickly went viral with her footage of the performance:
“When Tyler Childers finally plays ‘Jersey Giant’ live again for 61,000 people.”
To say the footage posted online from this moment is magical is an understatement. I can’t even imagine how electric it was in the Lexington stadium last night.
Check it out.

Check out a few comments from fans about this wild card setlist pull. I wonder if this will become a consistent add to Childers’ setlists, or if it was just a one-time deal for his home state.
“Childers casually has no clue just how wild this is that he actually performed it live.”
“I was there and I couldn’t believe it.”
“I predicted this and then died when he actually started playing it.”
“He’s home. So he’s more comfortable singing it.”
“Just got home from the show. Loved everything, but this was a huge highlight and very special. The drone show was also amazing.”
“Kentucky Strong”
“I actually lost my mind.”
“I was crying real tears.”
“Forever grateful to have experienced this.”
“If I didn’t move away from Kentucky, I would have been there tonight”
“Everyone almost shat their pants.”
“Never thought I’d see the day.”
Fire up the full song before you go.
