George Strait Fan & Denver Broncos Draft Pick, Jahdae Barron, Sang “Write This Down” During Jim Thorpe Award Acceptance Speech

With the biggest country music fan pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos selected Jahdae Barron. The defensive back out of Texas had his name called by the “Mile High” team during the first round of last month’s NFL Draft, and he’s already being considered one of the steals of the first round. Barron was widely expected to go within the top 10 or 12 picks, and when he dropped all the way to No. 20, the Broncos couldn’t pass him up. Considering Barron is a dark horse candidate for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, I’d say it was a pick-well-used by the Denver Broncos. Barron played corner, slot corner, and safety while he was with the Longhorns, so the Broncos are getting a talented and versatile player in the 23-year-old. Though he is deservingly getting a lot of attention for his skills on the football field, there’s a lot about Barron’s off-the-field personality that makes him interesting too. Not only has he said that his favorite person in the world is Matthew McConaughey (there’s a Texas connection there, so that makes sense), he’s also proclaimed his love for the genre of country music. Specifically, he loves the King of Country himself – George Strait. Don’t believe me? Well may I point you to the night that Barron accepted the Jim Thorpe Award back in February. This year’s Jim Thorpe Award ceremony, which honors the best defensive back in college football every single year, had quite the acceptance speech. I actually don’t know if it was a speech… it was more of a celebratory song, performed by Jahdae Barron himself. In reality, it looks like Jahdae Barron just appreciates all things country. He wore a cowboy hat during his draft party, and also had one ready to go in his official first pictures with the Denver Broncos. If he sounds like he’s a country fan (singing George Strait), and he looks like he’s a country fan (Cowboy hat), he’s gotta be a country fan. That’s a strait banger (pun very much intended), and it came out before the talented football player was even born (1999… feel old yet?). It’s one of my personal favorites by Strait, and I don’t know how anyone could ever get tired of the track’s chorus: “Baby, write this downTake a little note to remind you in case you didn’t knowTell yourself I love you and I don’t want you to goWrite this downTake my words and read ’em every day, keep ’em close byDon’t you let ’em fade awaySo you’ll remember what I forgot to sayWrite this down” Needless to say, it’s a George Strait classic. And no offense to Jahdae Barron (best of luck in the NFL)… but I think I prefer the country music legend’s rendition of the song over his: The post George Strait Fan & Denver Broncos Draft Pick, Jahdae Barron, Sang “Write This Down” During Jim Thorpe Award Acceptance Speech first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
