Ernest Enlists Ella Langley On Stellar Duet Of “Would If I Could”
Filling in for Lainey Wilson.
Ella Langley and Ernest are a duo that I’d like to see collaborate one day, and even more so after seeing them perform together. On Monday night, Ernest hosted a free concert outside of Nashville’s Loser’s Bar & Grill, a popular bar in Midtown, to celebrate the launch of his new record label, DeVille Records.
Ernest and some of his friends, including Jake Worthington, Jamey Johnson, Morgan Wallen, and Miss Ella Langley, provided excellent music throughout the night. While Morgan Wallen’s surprise appearance to perform an acoustic version of “Flower Shops” was a noteworthy performance, there is another duet that I think also needs some attention.
Miss Ella Langley, the newly named ACM New Female Artist of the Year, hit the stage with Ernest filling in for Lainey Wilson on a knockout performance of “Would If I Could.”
Originally written in 1996 by two of the all-time great country music songwriters, Dean Dillon and Skip Ewing, the classic country heartbreaker was adapted for Ernest’s NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE record. Ahead of the duet’s release, Wilson shared that she was obsessed with the song, and Ernest felt like it embodied what this record represented at its core.
Ernest described the record as an attempt to honor the songwriting and storytelling that make country music so unique and special, and he and Wilson did just that on this cover of “Would If I Could.”
“I was born and raised in Nashville. I love this city, it’s the country music capital of the world, and this album is a positive affirmation in the name of country music. That country at its core, the songwriting and storytelling, is popular again.”
While I don’t think there is any need to replace Wilson on this duet, given hectic tour schedules, interview appearances, and more, sometimes a friend needs to take the place of the original duet partner, and Ella Langley did just that on Monday night.
Given that the duet was done acoustically, it allowed Langley to shine as she delivered the lyrics. Her vocals are as smooth as butter, and she filled Wilson’s shoes flawlessly during this performance. Both musicians’ vocals pair flawlessly together, laying down harmonies that could kill.
I could sit and listen to those two all day. I hope we get more from Ernest and Ella Langley in the future.
Check it out.
