Jelly Roll Visited A Local Minnesota Adult Detention Center Hours Before Performing With Post Malone At U.S. Bank Stadium
Jelly Roll won’t ever pass up an opportunity to give back.
The rapper-turned-country-artist has been passionate about giving back to those that are less fortunate ever since he hit it big in the music industry. Why? Because he used to be in the shoes of the less fortunate, and he knows first hand how hard and troubling of times they can be.
And Jelly Roll loves to remind those people that it’s never too late to get back on the right path.
That’s why the “I Am Not Okay” singer takes every opportunity he can to talk and visit with those that are incarcerated. Before he played in Minneapolis, Minnesota this past Tuesday night as a part of Post Malone’s Big A** Stadium Tour (Jelly and Sierra Ferrell have been supporting), Jelly Roll stopped by the Adult Detention Center in Hennepin County, Minnesota to visit with those that were currently in the shoes that he used to fill himself.
The Sheriff’s office was thrilled to see the country music star, and shared this message in a post on Facebook about his visit to the facility:
“Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is still reeling from a surprise visit this afternoon at the Adult Detention Center. Ahead of his concert tonight, Jelly Roll made a special appearance inside our jail, meeting the sheriff, staff, and sharing his inspirational story with detainees. He spoke to detainees and described how he turned his life around after being locked up for years and becoming a father.”
Their post shared photos of Jelly Roll interacting with officers within the building, as well as speaking to those that were currently detained inside the detention center. The HCSO even shared some words that the singer-songwriter spoke to those that were currently being held in custody:
“When I was 13 years old I caught my first criminal charge… I would spend the next thirteen years in and out of the system. I didn’t go home to become rich and famous. I just wanted to be the dad I didn’t have.”
It’s always inspiring to see Jelly Roll share his testimony. And if he’s not doing it inside of a jail as he’s talking to inmates, he’s shouting his message – and often his praise to the Lord – on a stage at an awards show or a concert. When it comes time to uplift others, Jelly Roll is freight train that can’t be stopped… and I mean that in the best way possible.
Sheriff Dawanna Witt of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office would certainly agree with me. She provided this statement about Jelly’s quick-but-greatly-appreciated stop at their facility, and how his message and story can be an inspiration to those behind bars:
“Jail time shouldn’t be wasted time. Jelly Roll is a great example of how jail programs can change lives.”
Before Jelly rolled out (sorry, had to do it), Sheriff Witt gifted him a commemorative key to the jail. That caused the “Need A Favor” singer to grin from ear-to-ear. I’d have to imagine having a key to a jail after personally dealing with incarceration for a lot of your own life is a really cool, full circle moment for him.
God bless Jelly Roll for continuing to be a bright light:
