Well there is a crop that fits this description, and amazingly, hardly anyone grows it. Enter the Jerusalem artichoke or 'sunchoke'. UTL COMMENT:- I now grow them at home! Yes they are edible, have beautiful flowers and are PROLIFIC. They grow 10-12 feet tall in full sun and did I mention they're PROLIFIC? They propagate through little tubers, broken pieces (like a broken piece you might leave when digging them up) and through seeds from the dried flower heads. I grew them in a large bucket so they wouldn't get out. The pretty flowers and buckets of edible tubers are attractive.
