Kane Parsons, the teen creator of the viral YouTube videos “The Backrooms,” is set to direct a movie version of his project for A24. Deadline reports that Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Old Guard) and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) are set to star in Parsons’ film, though it is not known who (or what) they’ll be playing. Deadline notes, “Character details for both Reinsve and Ejiofor are under wraps, as is the plot of the film, which is now officially greenlighted. Production is set to begin this summer.” The concept of The Backrooms began with a 2019 4chan thread, and offer a window into a new dimension that can be accessed by “no clipping” out of our current reality. As one does. Parsons uploaded “The Backrooms (Found Footage)” to YouTube in 2022; the video follows a filmmaker who stumbles into an eerie and mystifying series of rooms that probably houses some unnerving monsters. That video, and Parsons’s follow-ups, have more than 190 million views, and the concept has expanded, appearing in series like American Horror Story and video games, which sometimes expand the lore involved in the existence of the backroom. (Parsons’ series also eventually introduces some backstory.) The film has quite a list of producers, including Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) and James Wan (Malignant).
