How Close is WWIII After Russian Violated NATO Airspace Again?

A series of Russian aircraft from drones to warplanes violated NATO airspace last week, bringing serious concerns.

This last week, Russian drones flew over Poland, Romania, and warplanes over Estonia. As of Tuesday, those incursions expanded to Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. Is Vladimir Putin experiencing a psychotic break, or his officers? The Russian incursion over NATO airspace could create a serious problem…for the world.

President Trump, speaking at a bilateral meeting with Ukraine President Zelensky on Tuesday Sept 23, was asked if he thought the European countries involved should shoot down the Russian aircraft when they violated NATO airspace. He responded: “Yes. I do.”

Mike Waltz, US Ambassador to the UN challenged Russia to stop violating NATO airspace. If Putin has an ounce of sanity left, he should comply. If he has lost his mind, then the violations will likely continue. Which could lead to a deadly situation. Could it progress to WWIII? We hope not, but tensions are high.

The Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) briefed the Council on this incident in which three armed Russian MiG-31 aircraft violated Estonian airspace for over ten minutes. NATO’s response was quick and decisive. Allied aircraft were scrambled to intercept and escort them from Estonian airspace.

This incursion is part of a wider pattern of increasingly irresponsible Russian behaviour. This is the second time in two weeks that the North Atlantic Council has met under Article 4. On 10 September, the Council held consultations in response to the large-scale violation of Polish airspace by Russian drones. Several other Allies – including Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Romania – have also recently experienced airspace violations by Russia. We express our full solidarity with all Allies whose airspace has been breached.” NATO Press Release

While none of this is actually new, and Russia has violated airspace before in countries like Turkey and Finland, this is coming at a bad time. If Russia is “testing the waters” they are playing with fire. Violating NATO airspace could result in an unwanted situation that affects the entire world. We don’t need it.
