Cinematic icon Diane Keaton passed away on October 11, 2025, at the age of 79. Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton decided to seek her fortune in New York City in the ’60s, and soon kicked off a career that would lead the San Francisco Chronicle to call her “probably [one of] the best comic film actresses alive.”
The Oscar and Emmy-winning Keaton did more than just star in some of the most enduring films of the 20th century, from The Godfather to Annie Hall to The First Wives Club (and some less-enduring but still-intriguing films, like Warren Beatty’s epic Reds and the ’80s mom-com Baby Boom). She was also a fashion icon, intriguing generations with her unique vintage style. Ahe directed one film, the 1987 documentary Heaven, in which various interview subjects gave their thoughts on the afterlife. And the never-married Keaton, who adopted two children on her own in her 50s, was always an inspiration to unconventional women.
“I never understood the idea that you’re supposed to mellow as you get older,” she told AARP in 2012. “Slowing down isn’t something I relate to at all. The goal is to continue in good and bad, all of it. To continue to express myself, particularly. To feel the world. To explore. To be with people. To take things far. To risk. To love. I just want to know more and see more.”
Celebrate Keaton’s legacy by testing your knowledge of her work — and maybe go rent a movie or two of hers this week.
