What To Know

  • The song featured in the Stranger Things season 5 trailer is Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever,” originally written by Brian May for the 1986 film Highlander.
  • The track’s themes of immortality and loss in Highlander may parallel the final battle storyline against Vecna in the new season, though its inclusion could also reflect its contemporary popularity in 1987.
  • Stranger Things season 5 will be released in three parts between November 26 and December 31, 2025, with the finale premiering in theaters and on Netflix.

A dramatic song plays in the background of the brand-new Stranger Things season 5 trailer — and this isn’t the first time the tune has been used in service of a fantasy classic. The song, Queen‘s “Who Wants to Live Forever,” was released on the band’s 1986 album A Kind of Magic, but is more famous as a song from the soundtrack to Highlander, the 1986 fantasy-adventure film about immortal warriors duking it out in the modern world.

What’s the back story of “Who Wants to Live Forever?”

Though several Queen songs appear on the Highlander soundtrack, “Who Want to Live Forever” was written by Brian May specifically for the film. May penned the track after watch a rough cut of a scene in which Connor MacLeod, the immortal, ageless titular Highlander, watches his mortal bride Heather age and die. On the album version of the song, May sings the first verse and Mercury sings the rest, while Mercury sings the full song on the soundtrack version. The band is accompanied on the track by an orchestra led by Michael Kamen, who did the film’s score.

“Who Wants to Live Forever” isn’t Queen’s only Highlander connection, by the way — “Princes of the Universe” was also on the soundtrack, but might be more familiar as the theme song to the syndicated Highlander TV show, which ran from 1992 to 1998.

What does the song have to do with the new season of Stranger Things?

It’s unclear if the song has any major significance to the new season, except that it would be fairly contemporary; the new season takes place in 1987, so the song would be only a year old, and still popular.

But its use might be intending to evoke some of the themes of Highlander. In the film, immortals battle until there is only one remaining, which has some parallels to the season’s theme of the final battle against Vecna.

Strangers Things season 5 drops in three sections: Vol. 1 (four episodes) premiere on November 26, 2025, Volume 2 (three episodes) premieres on December 25, 2025, and the two-hour series finale, which will be shown in movie theaters as well as on Netflix, drops on December 31, 2025.
