How did The Carol Burnett Show get on the air?

THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW, Carol Burnett, 1967-78

The Carol Burnett Show first debuted in 1967, and according to Burnett, it came to be due to a contract clause no one had ever expected her to exercise. After years of Broadway success, specials, and roles in variety shows alongside talents like Bob Newhart, Burnett was given a 10 year contract with CBS with an unusual stipulation: if she decided, within five years of signing the contract, that she wanted to star in 30 one-hour variety specials, she could. Shortly before the end of that five-year period, Burnett and her then-husband, TV producer Joe Hamilton, decided to the option to have her own show, and The Carol Burnett Show was born. The show ran for 11 seasons, led to spinoffs including Mama’s Family, and jumpstarted the career of Vicki Lawrence.
