The two victims killed in a mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday have been identified, including Ella Cook, a sophomore, vice president of the school’s college Republicans club, and a practicing Catholic.
Cook was a parishioner at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Alabama, where her death was announced during Mass on Sunday.
“Tragically, one of our parishioners, Ella Cook, was one of those who was killed yesterday,” said Rev. Craig Smalley, according to AL.com.
“And those of you who knew her, those of you who know her, she was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light … not only here growing up here at the Advent in the myriad ways in which she served faithfully and the ways in which she encouraged and lift up those around her, but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”
The New York Post reported that Cook, vice president of Brown University’s Republican club, was a kind-hearted soul, citing peer Alex Shieh.
“Cook was one of the only people who dared to associate with [Shieh] after he came under fire for sending a DOGE-inspired email to thousands of administrators at the school … ‘Everyone at Brown who knew Ella, regardless of their politics, found her to be friendly and kind. My thoughts are with Ella’s family. Ella was a promising young leader taken too soon,’ Shieh wrote on X,” according to the Post.
The second slain victim is Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman at the Ivy League university.
“He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” according to a GoFundMe page set up by his family. “He continues to be my family’s biggest role model in all aspects. He always lent a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation, and was the most kind-hearted person our family knew.”
The shooting reportedly took place in a “Principles of Economics” final exam review session.
A vigil was held Sunday evening at Lippitt Memorial Park to honor the victims. In addition to Cook and Umurzokov, nine others were wounded in the shooting and are recovering from their gunshot wounds.
“Kendall Turner, a student from North Carolina, is the only one listed in critical condition, her high school confirmed to WRAL. The other eight have stabilized, and one was discharged,” the Post reported.
Late Sunday, police released a man who had been held as a person of interest in the shooting.
“Officials at the news conference said the investigation was continuing. They provided no details about the man who they released, who had been taken into custody early Sunday in Coventry, R.I., about 20 miles from Brown’s campus in Providence,” the New York Times reported.
Brown has canceled classes for the rest of the semester and given students a variety of options for how they can receive their final grades for the semester, the Brown Daily Herald reported.
