What To Know

  • Kate Hudson has turned down offers to costar with her mother Goldie Hawn because she feels they haven’t found a script that’s funny or unique enough for their on-screen pairing.
  • Hudson and Hawn are open to working together in the future but are waiting for the right project that stands out to both of them.
  • While Hudson hasn’t acted with her mother, she has worked with other family members, including her brother Oliver on a podcast and her stepfather Kurt Russell in the film Deepwater Horizon.

Kate Hudson is part of one of the most impressive acting dynasties around — the Academy Award nominee is the daughter of Academy Award winner Goldie Hawn, who raised her with Golden Globe nominee Kurt Russell. However, the actress, 46, who appears in the new Neil Diamond musical Song Sung Blue, has never appeared in a film alongside her iconic mom. And  on the December 22 episode of Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, per Variety, she revealed the reason she’s turned down all previous offers for films that would put the mother and daughter on screen together: the script has “gotta be really funny,” she said. “It’s gotta hit in a different way.”

While Hudson hasn’t rejected the idea of eventually doing a film with Hawn, 80, she and her mother feel that they haven’t found the right script yet: “We think about it, it’s just we haven’t read it yet. We haven’t figured that one out.”

Hudson isn’t totally opposed to the idea of working with family: she and brother Oliver Hudson cohost the Sibling Revelry podcast, and she and stepfather Kurt Russell both appeared in the 2016 film Deepwater Horizon. Working on set with Russell, who raised Hudson (Hawn and Hudson’s biological father, Bill Hudson, split in 1982), was “a reminder of where I fell in love with making movies,” the actress said in a 2016 Good Morning America appearance.

Others in the Hawn-Russell clan have also appeared on screen together: Kurt and Wyatt Russell both starred in the 20233 Apple TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, playing the same character in two different timelines. Hawn and Russell famously first met on a film set, and began dating after both appearing in the 1983 film Swing Shift; in 1987, they costarred in the rom-com Overboard. In 2018, Hawn had a small role as Mrs. Claus opposite Russell’s Santa Claus in The Christmas Chronicles, and in 202o, the pair again reprised the roles.
