Margaret Brennan Is a Punchline

Margaret Brennan's interviewing style sparks debate and comedic moments in political discourse.

I kinda sorta maybe hope that Margaret Brennan DOESN'T get the axe as Bari Weiss cleans out the Augean Stables at CBS.

She is, objectively, a national comedic treasure.

I long ago gave up on watching what we all (used to?) call the "Sunday Shows," which are little more than the talking points distribution mechanism for the midwit class who want to be up on "the news" without having to put in the work to learn what is really going on.

Gone are the days of Tim Russert and the geeky-looking, bespectacled old hands, and now we have the age of the AWFL (and little Georgie). Margaret Brennan is the star of the day for me, at least in the clips, because she reminds me of those days I spent in graduate school with the overly self-confident wannabes.

Brennan so clearly HATES Republicans with a passion, but is so mind-blowingly ignorant that she makes them look good while doing so. Watching her take on Marco Rubio is almost worth the price of admission to watch the show.

Granted, even a smart journalist would have a hard time making Marco look bad. The guy is a star who makes even fairly smart and informed people look small in comparison. He is now in charge of about five or six different countries and agencies, I think, and somehow juggles it all while looking like a (big-eared) stud, too.

That's comedic gold, man.

Brennan must take facial expression lessons. There's hardly a Democrat she doesn't make googly eyes at, and hardly a Republican at whom she does not sneer.

I want to know who her acting coach is. Whoever it is probably makes a mint. Unless they are trying to teach her how to look serious and nonpartisan.

If so, they have their work cut out for them.

No doubt there is a class of people who find her approach refreshing, which is why they tune in to get their talking points. But not a one of those people is among the politically persuadable in America. They come into the show knowing their opinions already, and are only there to be fed the reasons why Trump and Republicans are bad, and to feel good that somebody in nominal authority agrees with them.

For those of us who have entered the post-cynicism phase where we can find the efforts of Pravda amusing rather than infuriating—admittedly, I can only reach that level of sang froid every third day or so—Brennan is something of a gift.

She is so transparent and so demonstrative in her negative emotional reaction to all things Republican that we can just sit back and appreciate her performance.
