What To Know
- Of the classic Grateful Dead lineup, only Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart are still alive as of 2026.
- Founding members Bob Weir (died 2026), Phil Lesh (2024), Jerry Garcia (1995), and Ron “Pigpen” McKernan (1973) have all passed away.
- Kreutzmann and Hart continued to perform in various Grateful Dead spinoffs, including Dead & Company and the Other Ones.
Founding Grateful Dead member Bob Weir died on January 10, 2026, at the age of 78, following bassist Phil Lesh, who died in 2024; singer/guitarist Jerry Garcia, who passed in 1995; and keyboardist, singer and instrumentalist Ronald “Pigpen” McKernan, who died in 1973.
Though the band has had many additional members and split off into many side groups through the years, only two members of the classic lineup of the Grateful Dead are still alive today.

Kreutzman, 78, stayed with the Dead throughout their entire run and performed in several spinoff and related bands, including the Other Ones and the Dead. In 2015, he cofounded Dead & Company with Weir and Hart. He was not included in the band’s 2023 Final Tour; according to a band statement, this was due to a “shift in creative direction.”
