Not one professor at Yale University donated to a Republican politician in 2025, but nearly 98 percent of the political donations from professors went to Democrats, with the rest to independents, according to the Yale Daily News.

“The News analyzed data from more than 7,000 Federal Election Commission filings from 2025 for which the employer was listed as Yale. Of 1,099 filings that included ‘professor’ in their occupation, 97.6 percent of the donations went to Democrats, while the remaining 2.4 percent went to independent candidates or groups,” the student newspaper reported Jan. 14.

However, 17 people who listed Yale as their employer donated to Republican candidates or groups in 2025, but they did not list professor as their occupation, the newspaper reported.

The news comes on the heels of a Buckley Institute report that found that out of the 43 departments surveyed, 27 entire departments contained zero Republican professors.

Out of the 1,335 faculty members reviewed by the institute, only 30 were identified as Republican, while 1,099 were identified as Democrats.

In interviews with the Daily News, several professors blamed draconian Trump administration policies for the lack of donations to Republican politicians and causes.

At least one professor expressed dismay by the imbalance.

“It’s true, there is very very, very little intellectual diversity at Yale and at most institutions of higher learning when it comes to politics,” Carlos Eire, a history and religious studies professor, told the Daily News. “Academics in the US, Canada and Europe have been leaning left for the past three or four generations. And this is something that shows no signs of being corrected or correcting itself anytime soon.”
