They’ve been a little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll for half a century! Donny Osmond took to social media today to shout out the 50th anniversary of Donny & Marie, the 1976 variety show that made them superstars.
In his video, Osmond told fans, “As most of you may know, today marks the 50th anniversary of ‘Donny & Marie’ … 50 years! I’m only 35, I can’t figure that out. Hey, I just want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you to everyone who’s followed us, supported us, and shared in these wonderful memories over the years. It truly means more than I can even say.”
He went on to add, “And check this out! Today, something very special happened. Marie and I are being featured in People Magazine celebrating this incredible milestone! That’s cool! You know, it’s great to be able to look back in history but it’s also great to look to the future. Donny & Marie debuted on ABC on January 23, 1976, where it would run for 78 episodes under the production guidance of Land of the Lost creators Sid and Marty Krofft. The vibrant variety show was known for its colorful costumes, wild musical numbers, and genuine charming family connection between Donny and Marie. Though the Osmonds went their separate ways professionally for a while after the show wrapped, they reunited in 1998 with the syndicated daytime talk show Donny & Marie and continue to frequently perform live together, most recently at with an 11-year-long residency at Las Vegas’ Flamingo Hotel.
