US—President Donald J. Trump has declined to hold hands and sing unity anthems with self-described demonic communists, a group that has repeatedly vowed to see him and his supporters eliminated.
The announcement came during a Rose Garden address three days after the assassination of political commentator and Trump-supporter Charlie Kirk.
When asked if he would consider singing John Lennon’s Imagine with several celebrities in response to the assassination, Trump declined.
“This is a time to come together as one people and forgive and forget,” CNN contributor Van Jones said in response. “That fascist won’t unify with us, even after we’ve called for his destruction in every conceivable medium. It’s unconscionable.”
Media commentators across the spectrum expressed dismay that Trump would pass on what they described as “a golden opportunity to be eaten alive for the greater good of unity.” MSNBC host Joy Reid called the refusal “proof of Trump’s selfishness,” adding, “A real leader would at least consider sacrificing himself on the altar of bipartisanship.”
The Washington Post editorial board lamented that Trump had once again chosen “division over demonic communism,” warning that the nation cannot move forward until the President demonstrates a willingness to “make peace with forces explicitly sworn to annihilate him.”
At press time, the White House confirmed Trump would continue prioritizing survival, while promising to revisit the question of unity once the opposition stops chanting for his death.
