Heritage explains why some lack respect for nature

DOMESTIC. Researchers from the University of Gothenburg and the Swedish Agricultural University have found in a new meta-study that not only upbringing and culture but also innate functions in the brain affect a person's ability to feel love for animals and nature.

- In another study on identical and fraternal twins, it was possible to see that there is a genetic component that affects the individual's positive or negative relationship with nature, says Bengt Gunnarsson, professor emeritus of environmental science at the University of Gothenburg, in a press release.

At the same time, it has become obvious that there are quite a few people in Sweden who feel no love for animals or nature at all.

- There are probably quite a large number of people who do not have such positive feelings towards nature, partly due to hereditary factors. Future research, which digs deeper into the question of interaction between heritage and environment, is a must if we are to understand what shapes individuals' relationship with nature, says Bengt Gunnarsson.
