America’s Oldest Mall Transformed Into Residential Space With 48 Abandoned Shops Converted Into Homes

Around the world‚ there’s a growing embrace of the trend towards smaller‚ more compact living spaces‚ often called “shoebox” living. This shift reflects a desire among many to scale back and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle‚ facilitated by the availability of compact‚ repurposed‚ or off-the-grid living quarters. A housing developer‚ Evan Granoff jumped on the housing trend as he recently repurposed the oldest mall in America Mall‚ Providence Arcade — an iconic structure with a rich history. The indoor shopping‚ which was constructed in 1828‚ had been abandoned due to bankruptcy‚ and Granoff seized the opportunity to transform the building into a space that aligns with the principles of sustainable living. America’s oldest mall with abandoned shops now serves as residential homes Wikimedia Commons In 2005‚ following the acquisition of the mall‚ Granoff initiated a transformative project by converting the upper-level retail spaces into a series of micro-apartments while businesses and the original sun-flooded atrium were placed on the first level. These innovative living spaces offer residents the opportunity to lease a one-bedroom unit ranging from 225 to 800 square feet‚ with rental prices starting at $550 per month. Each apartment is thoughtfully designed‚ featuring a kitchen‚ a full bath with a shower‚ built-in beds‚ seating areas‚ and ample storage solutions. RELATED: Vintage Burger King Found Preserved Behind A Shopping Mall Wall The apartments are suited for people who want to live sustainable lifestyles‚ so they do not include stoves. Tenants can access freshly designed restaurants conveniently located on the ground floor‚ providing various dining options. Despite the limitations‚ people are quickly taking up the offer. Youtube video screenshot Early last year‚ an announcement was made that tenants would soon have the opportunity to transition from renting to ownership‚ with units available for purchase starting at $130‚000 and commercial spaces at approximately $125‚000. Importantly‚ Granoff emphasized that tenants who prefer renting will experience no significant changes‚ as rental options will remain available. Youtube video screenshot The developer openly shared that his project was cost-effective‚ emphasizing his desire for other investors to step forward and support similar initiatives‚ as it would contribute positively to the economy. “The location and size are everything unless you live at The Arcade. This lifestyle is ideal for those that have the means for saving their money. Hopefully‚ this concept is adopted by others so that maybe more abandoned malls can be repurposed for housing people‚” Granoff admitted. “The incredible amount of space gives so much potential for living situations. I’m anticipating that a lot of people who are renting in the building right now will buy the units that they’re in because it’ll make economic sense for them.” Click for next Article The post America’s Oldest Mall Transformed Into Residential Space With 48 Abandoned Shops Converted Into Homes appeared first on DoYouRemember? - The Home of Nostalgia. Hollywood Icon Tippi Hedren ‘Has No Memory Of Acting Career’ As She Battles Dementia

Tippi Hedren began her journey as a fashion model in the 1950s before catching the attention of acclaimed filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock‚ who gave her starring roles in his iconic 1963 thriller film The Birds and Marnie. Despite her brilliant performance‚ tensions brewed due to Hitchcock’s reputedly domineering demeanor‚ which had a detrimental impact on her professional trajectory. Following her break from Hitchcock‚ she continued her career‚ taking up roles in various projects like A Countess from Hong Kong‚ Five Against Kansas‚ Tiger by the Tail‚ and The Harrad Experiment. Hedren eventually stepped away from acting to focus on her Shambala Preserve‚ an 80-acre sanctuary dedicated to caring for and preserving lions and tigers. Recently‚ Hedren made the news again as a report recently emerged claiming that the 94-year-old currently battles dementia‚ a severe cognitive disease. Tippi Hedren is battling dementia Instagram A Spanish journalist Gustavo Egusquiza shared that he learned that Hedren is battling with dementia during his attempt to interview the actress. However‚ the reporter’s request was declined by her representatives‚ who cited Hedren’s health condition as the major reason. RELATED: Melanie Griffith Shows Off 94-Year-Old Mom Tippi Hedren In New Rare Photos Egusquiza explained that her agent did confirm that the neurological disease was taking a toll on her health as it had affected her memory. “Unfortunately‚ her agent confirmed to me that Tippi is dealing with dementia and is unable to remember her career‚” Egusquiza admitted. “It is a difficult situation for her and her family.” Instagram Tippi Hedren just celebrated her 94th birthday Tippi’s heartbreaking news arrives just a few weeks following the joyous celebration of the actress’s 94th birthday which was held in January. While celebrating the significant milestone‚ her daughter Melanie Griffith paid tribute to her on Instagram‚ as she shared two poignant photos capturing her mother adorned in a delicate pink cardigan and a shimmering beaded necklace. Instagram “Yesterday Mom‚ aka Mor Mor‚ turned 94!! Always up for a party! Happy Birthday Mama Tippi‚” she wrote in the caption. What’s the Maximum CB Radio Range?

What’s the Maximum CB Radio Range?

If you want to get into amateur radio usage‚ one of the very best ways to get started right away and cheaply is with CB radio. CB‚ or Citizen’s Band‚ radio can easily be installed in a vehicle‚ used as a base station for close-range communication‚ or even carried with you in the form of a handheld. But a radio is only as good as its range. So‚ what’s the maximum range of CB radio? communication devices inside bug out bag: a Baofeng HAM radio‚ walkie-talkies‚ flashlight and two chemlights The maximum range of CB radio is about 15 miles (24 kilometers) in ideal terrain and weather conditions with a high-quality‚ optimized setup‚ including a directional antenna. The maximum average range is much shorter‚ though‚ around 5 miles. That doesn’t sound like much compared to larger‚ more powerful ham radio sets‚ and it’s not‚ but it’s still more than enough to give you critical capability when you are on the road‚ or just trying to communicate with neighbors and other people in your community. But as expected‚ there’s a ton you need to learn about radios generally‚ and CB radios in particular before you can really know what they are capable of. Keep reading and I will tell you all about it… The Max Range of CB is Dependent on Equipment and Environmental Factors Basically‚ there’s no easy answer when it comes to the maximum range of a CB radio set. Any CB radio set! That’s because radio theory and propagation is a science‚ a very complicated one‚ and one with many variables and factors that you may or may not be able to control for. A deep dive into that would make for a humongous article indeed‚ but I’ll abbreviate it here so you can understand the basics. Basically‚ the maximum range of any given CB radio under various weather and atmospheric conditions is dependent on the power of the set‚ the quality and type of antenna‚ and also the terrain around the set and between the set and the receiver. Only by understanding these factors and making educated guesses about some others will you arrive at the actual number. The Type of Antenna Makes a Big Difference For starters‚ one of the most important things influencing CB Radio range‚ and one that you can change directly to make a big impact in most cases‚ is the type and quality of the antenna. The antenna is responsible both for receiving and for transmitting radio signals‚ something that most non-ops don’t know. Accordingly‚ if you have an antenna that’s made from fiberglass or other specialized materials‚ you can expect better‚ clearer transmissions. Likewise‚ a dual antenna setup will greatly improve transmission range in most circumstances. Another upgrade you might consider‚ although one that comes with many drawbacks much of the time‚ is a directional antenna‚ basically one that will focus your transmission in a given direction to the exclusion of a 360° all-around spread. Generally‚ you’ll only be able to get truly maximum range out of your CB radio‚ let’s say in excess of 10 miles‚ using a directional antenna. Terrain is Another Major Factor Terrain is the one big factor that every radio operator is both familiar with and limited by. Depending on the frequency that you are transmitting‚ radio waves have only a very limited ability to pierce obstacles. Dense forests‚ large buildings‚ and‚ worst of all‚ mountains and hills‚ can completely block radio signals. Basically‚ if your CB radio is within line of sight to the receiver‚ you can enjoy much better range under all conditions and regardless of your hardware limitations to a degree. If you were in a valley‚ though‚ between two lines of hills or mountain ranges‚ you’re only reliably going to be able to communicate with receivers that are in that valley with you‚ or else up on top of the high ground. Likewise‚ you can expect the range of your transmissions to be seriously hampered if you’re deep inside the skyline of a major metropolitan area; tall buildings and skyscrapers work just like man-made mountain ranges for our purposes! The Type of CB May Affect Output Don’t neglect to check the power output of your CB radio‚ too. The FCC restricts CB radios to 4 watts of power‚ max‚ but depending on your model it might have a lower output or even a variable output‚ at least under 4 watts. If you need more reach‚ you need more power‚ but make sure you don’t violate those FCC rules‚ or you can be in for major fines or even criminal charges depending on the context! SSB CBs Have Better Range as a Rule If you really want to maximize CB‚ look into an SSB CB set‚ which stands for single sideband. Without going too far into what these sets are and how they work‚ basically they have more power‚ perform better‚ and have access to 40 additional channels compared to your standard CBs. They have lots of advantages‚ with the one drawback being that if you’re communicating on those sidebands‚ you can only reach other CBs that are SSBs in kind. “Skip Shooting” Can Let a CB Communicate with Someone Hundreds or Thousands of Miles Away! When it comes to amateur radio usage‚ CBs are the runt of the litter in terms of range and performance‚ but even they are capable of reaching hundreds‚ or even thousands of miles away in the right circumstances! Sound unbelievable? Well‚ it’s more of a novelty than a valid strategy for reliable communications‚ but it’s still possible: the practice is called skip shooting among radio operators‚ and consists of bouncing a radio signal off of the charged ionosphere surrounding Earth. This practice requires expert radio theory‚ the right equipment‚ and also perfectly right atmospheric conditions owing to solar activity and a host of other factors. It’s seen as sort of a rite of passage or a badge of honor among seasoned operators‚ but it still goes to show you what is possible using a normally short-range radio if you have the right amount of know-how and determination… That being said‚ I must warn you: the FCC frowns on this‚ and according to FCC regulations‚ it is illegal to even attempt to communicate with any CB station that is more than 155.3 miles away. An oddly specific number‚ yes‚ but that’s the federal government for you. Even as a lark‚ only attempt to skip shooting at your own peril‚ and don’t say I didn’t warn you. How Can You Legally Increase the Range of Your CB? If you want to legally increase the range of your CB to maximize what it’s capable of‚ go about it in a logical way. First‚ assess your transceiver. Make sure it’s high quality‚ can achieve the maximum 4 watts of power allowed by law‚ is well maintained‚ has noise suppression‚ and the antenna is tuned. Speaking of the antenna‚ invest in the very best and most optimized antenna for your use case‚ be it mobile‚ handheld‚ or at home as a base station. You can get excellent long-range performance from the right omnidirectional antenna‚ but you’re generally going to always get the best range possible using a directional one. Lastly‚ double-check all of your cables‚ connections‚ connectors‚ and other equipment for quality and serviceability. You might have the most killer setup there is‚ but if the cable going from your antenna to your set is gnarly‚ kinked‚ and in bad repair‚ you’ll never get the range that you’re otherwise capable of. And‚ finally‚ do everything that you can to get the antenna as high as possible and specifically over major obstacles like woodlines‚ hills‚ and mountains. In a vehicle‚ obviously‚ you’re constrained by the roadway but you might be able to pull over and transmit at the top of a rise or some other elevated position. All of these tips‚ and you might be shocked to see how far you can reach out with a CB. The post What’s the Maximum CB Radio Range? appeared first on Survival Sullivan.

11 Manual Kitchen Tools Every Prepper Needs

Author of How to Prep When You’re Broke and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course Do you keep manual kitchen tools on hand so that you can cook from scratch‚ even when the lights go out? Every prepper’s kitchen could potentially benefit from these items. Some of them are like the ones our great-grandmothers used‚ while others are more closely related to a manual version of modern items. Here is a list of kitchen tools that you may want to add. I use several of these right now and have for years. Chopper I have this manual food chopper and use it regularly. It makes fast work of things like onions‚ garlic‚ and other veggies and saves me so much time during canning season.  I also use it when I need a lot of a particular chopped item‚ and when making fresh salsa. It’s an inexpensive addition to your prepper kitchen that can save you a lot of time chopping‚ dicing‚ and mincing. Slicer A good quality mandoline like this one can be incredibly useful when you need to slice things uniformly and thinly. I use mine particularly when I’m dehydrating produce to get thin‚ even slices. Food mill Canners will recognize a food mill. It helps you to get a nice‚ smooth puree for things like marinara or apple sauce. You can also use it for potatoes and even for baby food if you have a tiny human in the house. I find a food mill to be invaluable. I love this one because it’s ergonomic and easy to use. Rotary beater I still have and use my granny’s rotary beater. The listing calls this item an egg beater but it works well for baking too.  Any place you’d use a handheld mixer‚ you can also use a rotary beater. You’ll have to put some muscle behind it but this will help with batters‚ frostings‚ and mixing. Sure‚ you can use a fork but I find that a beater incorporates my ingredients much better. Mortar and pestle I find a mortar and pestle to be invaluable. It’s a great tool for macerating herbs and also for grinding dried ones. This has both culinary and medicinal uses – I use it when getting herbs ready for a decoction or an infusion‚ and also for getting the most flavor out of my kitchen spices before adding them to a dish. I’ve also used it to grind up medication to hide in my pets’ food‚ and you could do the same for humans who perhaps cannot swallow a pill. This is a really nice one that is a useful size. Can opener Do you have a manual can opener? Do you have two? (One is none and two is one!) This one is very high quality and is also easy to use. I’ve had a few that were really difficult to crank‚ but the Gorilla Grip is my absolute favorite. This is a place you really don’t want to cheap out‚ particularly since preppers often rely heavily on commercially canned goods. Manual meat grinder Here’s another place you don’t want to cheap out: with a meat grinder.  A meat grinder is a great way to make a tough‚ unpleasant cut of meat more palatable. I’ve tried the cheap $30-40 dollar ones and they break quickly‚ do a poor job‚ and are difficult to crank. This is the one that I swear by. It’s easy to assemble and disassemble for cleaning and works extremely well. Yes‚ it’s a bit of a physical workout‚ but not nearly as much as the cheap versions. French press or pour-over coffee maker If you want to be able to have your morning java long after the power goes out‚ there are two really simple options that only require your coffee and boiling water: the French press and the pour-over coffee maker. I’ve had this French press for years and always used it as my backup. But recently‚ my daughter got this pour-over coffee maker with a permanent filter. (I guess pour-over is trendy now?) Both of these make a great cup of coffee‚ and really‚ it’s up to your personal preference what kind to get. French press is less filtered and makes a stronger‚ bolder cup of coffee‚ so if you prefer a blonde roast or a lighter cup‚ you’ll want the pour-over version. If you get your coffee in whole-bean form‚ you’ll also want a coffee grinder. I love the vintage look of this one: the reviews are great and the price is right. Pasta maker Do you like pasta? Do you have hundreds of pounds of wheat put aside? If the answer to these questions is yes‚ then you might benefit from a manual pasta maker. It’ll save you a lot of effort when you can run your dough through this instead of rolling it out and carefully slicing it to the right size. Not only does it work well for noodles‚ but you can also use it for making dumplings and pierogie. Tortilla press I got my cast iron tortilla press in Mexico‚ but this one is very‚ very similar. It’s the very best way to get a nice thin tortilla to fry up. It’s nearly impossible to roll the dough thin enough‚ and that’s extremely time-consuming. Tortillas are another great way to use your stash of grains‚ and they are quick to make with a press. Ladies who I knew when I lived in Mexico would spend a few hours every weekend making fresh tortillas for the week ahead. Once you’ve had homemade tortillas‚ you’ll never want to go back to storebought. Wheat mill Grinding wheat is hard work. In good times‚ I would always recommend using an electric wheat grinder because the job is time-consuming and takes a lot of muscle. But if the power is out and you want to work your way through those wheatberries‚ you need a proper grinder. I’ve tried numerous different brands‚ and I always go back to the Wondermill Junior. There’s no other grinder around that does such a good job and really does so as efficiently as possible. Yes‚ there are cheaper ones‚ but you get what you pay for. If you stash grains in their whole form‚ you will need a grinder to make them ready for cooking. You can grind basically any grain with this device‚ and it also includes an auger to make masa and nut butter. If the Wondermill is too spendy‚ this is the next best choice. What are some manual kitchen tools you recommend? Do you have manual tools for your kitchen? Do you have the ones listed here? Are there others you’d recommend? And do you use them now or are you saving them for power outage situations? Let’s discuss it in the comments section. Where to Buy $75* at Amazon *at time of reviewing The Eggs We Compared Our research narrowed the field down to the several powdered egg brands that we tested: Legacy‚ Augason Farms‚ Ova Easy‚ Cracked Up‚ Judee’s‚ Readywise‚ Valley Food Storage‚ and more. You can see our full list of review criteria below in the What to Look For section‚ with an explanation for each. We focused on whole egg powdered eggs‚ rather than mixes like scrambled eggs or protein reductions. Both of those have their place‚ but we wanted to compare similar products and focus on the real deal. We’re always looking for new and better vittles for food storage‚ so if you have some powdered eggs that you swear by let us know in the comments. We review most of our tested reviews annually‚ so we can always get it in the next roundup round and see if it makes the cut and we can see if it will beat out our top picks. What to Look For The best egg powder has several important features to look for: Value Whole Egg Content Quality Preservation &; Packaging Shelf-Life When you get the right blend of these‚ you can find powdered eggs that will give you reliable long-term protein. Below‚ we break down what each of these features means for the different egg powders that truly set themselves apart. Value: Cost vs. Benefit The amount of money you spend on something like powdered eggs shouldn’t blow out your entire budget. Don’t go overspending or overdo it. If you only have $100 to get your prepper pantry started‚ going with a budget pick isn’t the end of the world. Budget according to your risk and your needs rather than just spending lavishly. On the flip side‚ you don’t want to go too cheap or just plain get the wrong thing. Powdered eggs that don’t say ‘whole egg’ on the packaging usually have a reduced yolk content. Whole Egg Content Whole egg powder is what you are looking for. There are many types of powdered eggs‚ but many have reduced yolk content or additives other than eggs. Examples include scrambled egg powder and egg protein powder. When you are looking for a pantry staple like powdered eggs you want to keep it simple‚ and that’s why you need whole egg powder. Quality You want what you put in your food storage to have consistent quality. Going through the trouble of storing and/or packaging food just to open it years later to find issues can be a huge let letdown. While we can only test batches we have on hand‚ online feedback makes it easy to discern the quality of brands that have been around for a while. Plus‚ many of the other features we discuss can tell us about a brand’s commitment to quality‚ including what packaging and preservation techniques they use. Preservation &; Packaging There are two main ways to produce powdered eggs: freeze-drying and spray-drying. Here are the main differences: Freeze-drying – This less common and more time-consuming method‚ freeze-drying usually involves blending the eggs‚ freezing them in a tray‚ and then placing the tray in a freeze dryer. This slightly improves taste and provides a longer shelf-life versus spray-drying. It can also be done at home with your own freeze-drying equipment. Spray-drying – The most common method for drying eggs involves preheating the eggs to 140 F‚ and then but into an industrial drying chamber blowing air at 270 F. The powder forms and leaves the chamber with the air continuously. Almost all providers package the dried egg powder into plastic or mylar bags with oxygen absorbers to further increase shelf life. Mylar bags are preferred for longer shelf-life‚ as we’ve hammered home in our mylar bag review roundup. Shelf-Life There is a wide range of shelf-life labels on powdered eggs because they come in different packaging and have different drying methods‚ with mylar being the best as we just mentioned above. Combined with industrial freeze-drying‚ this is how our top pick is able to store for over 15 years in a cool and dark storage area. A couple of years isn’t bad for egg storage‚ but this is a vast improvement over our other picks. Are Powdered Eggs Better for You? No‚ nutritionally they are almost indiscernible to fresh eggs. Powdered eggs have had the moisture pulled out of them through a drying process‚ which you reintroduce when you ‘reconstitute’ them. Some powdered eggs are cooked in the drying process‚ which can break down certain proteins. This means that powdered eggs may have slightly less protein than fresh eggs- and if you are looking for protein that may mean that they are not better for you. Do Powdered Eggs Taste Like Real Eggs? Powdered eggs are ‘real eggs’‚ so they taste very similar to fresh eggs when they are reconstituted and cooked. Those with discerning taste will be able to notice a difference‚ especially in texture. This difference depends on the brand‚ how the eggs were dried‚ and how well you reconstitute (add water) the eggs. Some brands have slightly better quality‚ which can affect the taste. Freeze-dried eggs typically taste the most similar to real eggs (versus spray-dried). Getting the water ratios to reconstitute the eggs can be tricky‚ and varies from different brands. If you don’t add enough water you can get grainy eggs and if you add too much you get watery. Follow the directions on the package to make sure it is just right. One thing that typically stands out if you are doing a side-by-side taste test with real eggs is that powdered eggs do not look like real eggs‚ even after they are reconstituted. Their runny appearance can look a little less appetizing if you are not used to it‚ but that doesn’t directly affect the taste. How to Cook Powdered Eggs Follow the instructions on the package to cook your powdered eggs because they can vary between brands and drying methods. Generally‚ you add 2 1/2 parts water to 2 parts egg powder to reconstitute the eggs. If you add too little water‚ it may end up tasting a little bit gritty. RoseRed Homestead on YouTube has a good how-to on cooking powdered eggs. She dehydrates and freeze-dries them herself using her home equipment: The Best Freeze Dryer for Drying Food at Home The Best Dehydrator for Prepping and Food Storage The video is nice because it shows you a variety of egg storage types and helps you understand a few different drying processes: Who Needs Powdered Eggs? Powdered eggs are pretty darn useful‚ whether you have a recipe calling for them or not. Preppers will enjoy the ability to store protein for years‚ which makes these eggs a staple for a prepper pantry. Powdered eggs are suggested for these kits: Survival Food Pantry Stockpile Pack some protein power in your food storage plan with some eggs with a serious shelf-life. How We Review Products: We research thoroughly before selecting the best products to review. We consult experts in the field for a better understanding of what makes the gear great. Hours on end are spent field testing gear in stressful conditions. We assign performance criteria and impartially rate each tested item. After our review process‚ some of the items reviewed end up in our giveaways. Sources and References All of our experience and the testing we do to find the best powdered eggs are useless without listing our research sources and references. We leaned on these for the book knowledge that we paired with our hands-on testing and practical military and prepping experience: Tracy‚ P.‚ et al.
