Alex Padilla (D-CA) disrupted a press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, loudly speaking over her and approaching the podium. Authorities quickly detained and removed Padilla, who was not wearing his Senate security pin and did not initially identify himself as a senator. Footage shows Padilla identifying himself only after being escorted out, saying, “I’m Senator Alex Padilla, I have questions for the secretary.” DHS and Secret Service officials stated that Padilla ignored repeated commands to back away, causing them to mistake him for a threat. Secretary Noem said Padilla’s behavior was “completely inappropriate” and unbecoming of a U.S. senator.
