The feature adaptation of the video game Minecraft, accurately titled A Minecraft Movie, cleaned up at the box office, making over $950 million worldwide since it’s release date in early April.
The movie is now finally making its way to streaming, and will be available on HBO Max starting on June 20, 2025. In addition to hearing Jack Black say chicken jockey on your television set (over and over and over, if you or the child in your life so desires), there will also be a version of the film released with Sophia Morales (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice with ASL) interpreting in American Sign Language. (Why they don’t do this for every movie, I don’t know, but good to see it happening here!)
In case you missed the deal with A Minecraft Movie the first time around, here’s the synopsis:
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.
The movie is directed by Jared Hess, with a script worked on by a lot of writers, including Chris Bowman & Hubbel Palmer and Neil Widener & Gavin James, and Chris Galletta.
In addition to being available to stream on HBO Max staring June 20, 2025, the movie will also air on HBO, the channel, on June 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
While we wait, check out the American Sign Language version of the trailer below.[end-mark]
