The end of an era. Of course, Willie Nelson has been a longtime advocate for marijuana and the legalization of it across the country, and even opened his own cannabis company, Willie’s Reserve, in 2015. It’s part of the center of his brand, and has been for many years, and he actually credits it for saving his life, as well as other people’s lives, because it helped him majorly cut back on drinking and the dangers that come with drinking too much too often. In an interview with E! News several years ago, he said: “Well, it not only saved my life, it probably saved some other people’s lives, because before I smoked marijuana, I was drinking a lot. And I might have killed a lot of people, too. So I’m just glad that that didn’t happen. I’m glad we live through all of bad times.” If that ain’t the most willie Nelson secret to life there is, I don’t know what could be… But he’s a man after my heart, as he says that he’ll still have a drink of tequila every now and then, too: “I still take a drink of tequila occasionally, but not like I used to.” There have been countless stories that are associated with Willie and weed, with people from Snoop Dogg to Toby Keith, but I think Luke Combs still might have the best one… you should ready that one HERE. Willie has continued to release albums in his ’90s, and he put out his 77th solo studio album, and 154th album overall, Oh What A Beautiful World in April, which focuses on the songs of Rodney Crowell and his extensive discography. He’s also currently out on his extensive Outlaw Music Festival Tour, which is all over the country and runs through the fall, though it sounds like he might really be slowing down in terms of his marijuana intake, as he revealed in an interview with Forbes that he “doesn’t really do anything now much except a few edibles.” Words I never thought I’d he utter, but more power to him, honestly: “Well, I can’t smoke anything anymore. My lungs have already said, ‘Don’t do that.’ So, I don’t really do anything now much except a few edibles.” It was known for a while that he couldn’t actually smoke anything, but to hear he’s pretty much quit altogether is surprising, but of course, completely understandable at his age and I guess all good things must come to an end eventually… we all know about Willie and weed, it’s a legendary combination like peanut butter and jelly, but we’ll always have the stories, though, and that’s what matters. And when asked what still makes him happy, after all he’s seen and done over the years, the red headed stranger gave a beautiful answer, saying it’s still music that gives him peace and brings people from backgrounds and beliefs of all kinds together: “I enjoy playing music, I enjoy seeing people get together and forget about everything except music. I think there’s a great positive exchange that takes place. We don’t care what political affiliation you’re with, what color you are, it doesn’t matter if you like music, come on.” Amen to that… long live Willie Nelson.
