At 52 years old, actor Eric Dane is suddenly faced with his mortality. The Gray’s Anatomy Star sat down with Diane Sawyer for the first time since announcing his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis diagnosis. The segment will air during Good Morning America on June 16, but ABC News shared a clip ahead of the interview. A somber Eric told Diane the news continues to shake him.

Eric Dane Shared His ALS Diagnosis in April
Eric Dane, a father of two and husband to Rebecca Gayheart, shared the news in April through a statement to People.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he revealed. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
Eric asked for time to digest the devastating news. “I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time,” he shared in his statement.
In the upcoming interview, Diane Sawyer asks the Euphoria star who he called first following the diagnosis. Eric Dane looked at her through tears, clearly heartbroken at the memory. The clip ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
There is no cure for ALS, but the ALS Association works every day to help those living with the degenerative disease.
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ‘Amyotrophic’ comes from the Greek language. ‘A’ means no. ‘Myo’ refers to muscle. ‘Trophic’ means nourishment. So, amyotrophic means’ no muscle nourishment,’ and when a muscle has no nourishment, it ‘atrophies. or wastes away,” the ALS Association explains. “‘ Lateral’ identifies the areas in a person’s spinal cord where portions of the nerve cells that signal and control the muscles are located. As this area degenerates, it leads to scarring or hardening (‘sclerosis’) in the region.”
