Going Airborne: Car Launches Into The Air When Road Buckles In Missouri
Summer has only just begun, but extreme heat is already taking over much of the United States. This can be seen across the country, but a recent incident in Missouri especially highlights the unexpected impacts this heat can have on us. On Sunday, June 22, a bulge formed on a busy road in the city of Cape Girardeau. For many drivers, this posed no threat — but then the road buckled.
Road buckling can lead to wrecks and car damage. And, as this incident shows, it can also cause vehicles to go airborne. In some cases, you may be able to spot that a road has buckled before driving over the area. But in this case, the road didn’t buckle until the very second before the car passed over it. Watch this unbelievable moment in the video below.

A few things have to occur for road buckling to take place. For starters, moisture has to seep into the cracks or joints of a road. Then the heat has to be so extreme that it causes the pavement to warp. When bad enough, these temperature changes and the expansion of the concrete can lead to a buckling.
Needless to say, when a road buckles, it has the potential to cause serious harm to both vehicles and humans alike. Thankfully, in this situation, no one got hurt.

Now, this video is being used to raise awareness of the dangers road buckling poses. While it may not be super common, it does happen more often than you may think during the kind of extreme heat many of us are facing at the moment. According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, the most important thing anyone can do is remain vigilant.
“In reference to safe driving and roadway buckling due to heat, drivers should be wearing a seat belt,” the department says, “and if a driver notices anything unusual with the roadway, please contact local law enforcement as soon as possible.”
