They worked in pairs, and at one point, three girls gave it a try. A fourth lioness sat up on the bank watching. The buoyant barrel would not bend to the will of the lions. It just kept rolling in the shallow water and drifting away from them. As with most things in a lion’s life, if it gives you problems, eat it. They tried that too, but were dismayed that their powerful jaws were ineffective against this foe. Tiberius, the male lion, was somewhere up the slope, probably amused watching the girls play with the barrel. He made no move toward assisting.
