Australian Firefighters Safely Retrieve Missing Dog Who Fell Down Mine Shaft
Ted and Penny, some of the cutest pups you will ever meet, recently got themselves into a dangerous situation. It all started when the two of them escaped their backyard, seemingly wanting to go on an adventure. In doing so, they ended up in an area that is full of mine shafts. Sadly, Ted fell down one of them, leaving him stuck. Thankfully, brave heroes were determined to rescue this sweet dog from the mine shaft.
But before they could rescue Ted from the mine shaft, they had to figure out where he and Penny even were. Over the course of four days, authorities and volunteers scoured the area. In the end, Penny herself helped save the day. As she stood guard over the mine shaft Ted had fallen into, she barked loudly enough for neighbors to hear.
Locating the dogs was only half of the challenge. The other half lay in trying to safely reach Ted. According to First Lieutenant Karl Shay, the mine shaft was particularly small. In fact, there was a log laying over the top, making the opening about “800 by 800 millimetres.” Once rescuers did reach Ted, however, this sweet dog could not have been more excited. Thankfully, Ted managed to make it out of this life-threatening ordeal fairly unscathed. According to the dogs’ owner, Chantal Henderson, they are “a little lighter than usual, but otherwise excellent.”
“Thank you to Ruth and her daughter [who found the dogs] for their perseverance searching the bush after hearing their barking,” Chantal says. “Without you they would never have been found.”
