Dear Tyler Childers fans… Are you feeling lied to? Are you feeling hoodwinked or bamboozled? Perhaps misled or tricked? Well, you’re not alone… you’re just wrong. But hey, misery loves company. Following the release of Tyler Childers’ longtime fan favorite, “Oneida,” and the Snipe Hunter tracklist that came along with it, I’ve see a number of fans complain that “Jersey Giant” wasn’t included on the tracklist. And the justification for their anger is the fact that Tyler showed us a Jersey Giant Easter egg in the trailer video. You know, that bird at the very end of the barber shop scene. I’ve seen a number of tweets or social media comments that look a lot like this: they show a literal Jersey Giant at the end of this video, but it's not on the track list for Snipe Hunter https://t.co/k84TIT95BM — Vander (@vanderdyt) July 2, 2025 Only problem… that wasn’t a Jersey Giant. It wasn’t a snipe either, and to be honest, I’m not ever sure it’s a real bird…it looks like a bit of taxidermy tomfoolery. Let’s break it down… What’s A Jersey Giant? For lack of a better definition, a Jersey Giant a specific breed of chicken, a rather large and usually black-colored one. Exhibit A: What’s A Snipe? A snipe is a little more confusing… mostly because it’s something that is both a made-up bird hunting prank, and… a real bird. Confused yet? Snipe hunting is essentially a prank that’s played on kids and novice hunters where you send them off with a bag to capture a “snipe,” a mythical bird that doesn’t exist. But Wilson’s Snipe IS a real bird, commonly found across the United States, one that some folks will even hunt for. There is also a Common Snipe found in other parts of the world. Exhibit B: As you can see, neither of those look remotely close to the bird in the video. The bird in the video looks mostly like a pheasant, but not exactly. And a little like a chicken, a little like a turkey with the beard, some rockhopper penguin or a crested owl with those wild eyebrows… it certainly doesn’t look like any bird I’ve ever seen. So all of that to say… there was no “Jersey Giant” Easter egg… no matter how bad you wanted there to be. Plus, Tyler has been pretty open and honest about the song no longer really serving him, and the fact that Elle King, Evan Honer, Sam Barber AND Josiah and the Bonnevilles have already recorded versions, made it seem far-fetched from the beginning. As much as I love many of the old Tyler Childers tunes, I’m glad that he gave fans a little taste from the vault, but is mostly releasing brand new music. I’m in the group of fans that has felt like the last few projects were a little “thin” in terms of what felt like new material so 13 songs, mostly brand new… that’s certainly a win in my book.
