New Book Reveals What President Trump And Obama Were Laughing About At Carter’s Funeral

Today’s tribal politics can result in broken relationships and bitter hostilities simply based on different ideological perspectives. But even President Donald Trump and Barack Obama, two of the most opposite political forces in recent memory, have been able to find common ground on occasion. That was apparently the case when the two men attended Jimmy Carter’s funeral earlier this year, as evidenced by viral footage that showed them seemingly engaged in a friendly conversation. As the New York Post reported, a new book claims to have the details about what Trump and Obama were discussing: “He sat next to Barack Obama and invited him to play golf, enticing him with descriptions of Trump’s courses around the world,” according to a passage from the book “2024: How Trump Retook the White House and the Democrats Lost America,” according to Axios. The book highlights Trump’s return to the White House in 2024 and the campaigns of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. It was written by political reporters Josh Dawsey, Tyler Pager and Isaac Arnsdorfn who worked at the Washington Post during the 2024 presidential campaign. It wasn’t known when Obama was invited to one of the 17 Trump-owned courses during the funeral, or whether the Democrat accepted the invitation. The two were photographed grinning and laughing before the start of Carter’s service. The two men are believed to have used their lighthearted facial expressions to mask a more serious conversation from prying eyes. At one point, Trump told Obama they had to “find a quiet place” later in the day to discuss a “matter of importance,” forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman told The Post. Their encounter fueled widespread social media commentary and speculation in January: NEW: Donald Trump seen cracking jokes with former President Barack Obama at Jimmy Carter’s funeral in Washington D.C. Trump also shook hands with former Vice President Al Gore, who was seated next to Pence. Trump did not appear to stand up when Obama went to greet him, but after taking his seat, Trump and Obama spoke to each other in what seemed from afar to be a friendly manner. Carter’s funeral brought together all five of the living American presidents: Trump, Obama, President Biden, former President Clinton and former President George W. Bush. But the moment between Trump and Obama was particularly notable given their longtime animosity toward each other. Here’s how Trump responded to a question about the encounter at the time:
