When Justin Hartsell’s wife had heart surgery, he wanted to do something special for her heart surgeon. He felt it only fitting, since the doctor really touched his wife’s heart. After doing carpentry work most of his life, he discovered wood carving. That was only a few years ago, but Justin loves making wood sculptures. He hails from Newport, TN, and is a natural sculptor. Justin uses only fallen trees or reclaimed wood. They don’t use any fresh-cut wood. They take custom orders and are always looking for creative ideas for new sculptures. Justin specializes in wildlife, plants, sinks, and fungi, but likes a challenge. He accepted this challenge with his talent and excelled with his anatomically accurate heart. Image from TikTok. Smokey Mountain Timber Creations offers live carving demonstrations. Customers can purchase from their inventory of home decor. They can carve your custom design and ship it to you. If you’re hosting an event and wish to decorate with wood sculptures but can’t purchase them, they offer the option to rent select pieces for your event. Justin went all-out on the heart wood sculpture. It began life as an Eastern red cedar log. He often doesn’t know how well an item will look until after he applies the final finishing sealer. Justin’s videos show how many of his sculptures come to life. On larger pieces, he begins with a chainsaw to create a rough shape before switching to hand carving.
