Charles Wesley Godwin Puts Bluegrass Spin On “She Don’t Love Me Anymore” In New ‘Hometown Sessions’ Video
Another week, another gem.
As we patiently wait for the announcement of album #4 from Charles Wesley Godwin, the “All Again” singer has been keeping fans satisfied with his new series of live performance videos titled “Hometown Sessions,” which were shot in his hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia, at the Metropolitan Theater.
Godwin, who has remained one of the premier voices and songwriters in the country scene since his debut in 2019 with Seneca, has continually flown under the radar. With one of the most unique voices in the genre, a pen that rivals heavy hitters such as Tyler Childers and former tourmate/collaborator, Zach Bryan, and one of the tightest backing bands, The Allegheny High, the West Virginia native is undoubtedly one of the best in the business.
In an Instagram post announcing the “Hometown Sessions” back on July 9th, Godwin said:
“Earlier this year, the Allegheny High and I worked with Justin Clough to film some performance videos for y’all at The Metropolitan Theater, one of my favorite venues in my hometown of Morgantown, West Virginia. We chose some of our favorite songs to perform live, and even reworked a few, like this version of ‘She Don’t Love Me Anymore.’”
In total, Godwin promised new versions of eight different songs, all of which would be posted weekly on his YouTube channel.
“Whitehouse Road”
“All Again”
“Strawberry Queen”
“Hardwood Floors”
“She Don’t Love Me Anymore”
“It’s The Little Things”
“Lonely Mountain Town”
“Seneca Creek”
After kicking things off back on July 15th with a cover of Tyler Childers’ “Whitehouse Road” and most recently uploading a rockin’ version of “Hardwood Floors,” yesterday, Godwin delivered arguably the best arrangement of the series yet — a bluegrass spin on one of his most recent releases, “She Don’t Love Me Anymore.”
“She Don’t Love Me Anymore” appeared on his first studio EP, Lonely Mountain Town, back in February. It was easily one of the highlights of the already stacked project, which featured the severely underrated “It’s The Little Things,” as well as features from fellow Big Loud member, HARDY, and Scott Avett of The Avett Brothers.
Like Godwin promised, “She Don’t Love Me Anymore” received a complete reworking that matches the way he plays it at his shows. As much as I love the studio version, I have to say, this is the definitive recording of the song to me. The bluegrass spin, complete with a faster tempo and brilliant banjo and mandolin work from members of the Allegheny High, gives the track a completely new identity and sounds wonderful.
With the premise of the song as traditional as they come, it felt as if it was simply begging to receive a bluegrass spin at some point. As time passes and Godwin continues to flex his musical ability, I don’t think there’s a certain style or subgenre that he cannot nail.
With five videos in the series already posted, only “Seneca Creek,” “Lonely Mountain Town” and “It’s The Little Things” remain to be posted. Here’s to hoping we get an official release of all the tracks on streaming (and hopefully vinyl) soon.
