While walking in the park, Erin Stearns and her boyfriend heard a momma duck making a loud racket. Others kept on walking, ignoring the sound of obvious distress. Erin couldn’t ignore it, so the couple investigated. They discovered two ducklings stuck in an overflow drain, unable to get out. Hurrying off, her boyfriend returned with a child’s butterfly net. That was too small, so he got a bigger net with a longer handle. Although that was the right tool for the duck rescue, it frightened the little ducklings. They kept swimming back into the drainpipe. Using patience, Erin’s boyfriend blocked the drainpipe entrance with the net. He was finally able to scoop the little ducklings into the net and lift them over the retaining wall of the overflow. As soon as they hit the water in the main pond, they hurried toward the center. Momma Duck was off to the side, keeping a wary eye on the rescue operation. Image from TikTok. She flew out to where her ducklings were, and the little family was reunited. Mallard ducks typically lay from eight to twelve eggs. This momma duck has already lost enough of her babies. We’re glad that Erin and her boyfriend could rescue the little ducks.
