It’s hard to know where to start with the animated film Arco, which comes from French director Ugo Bienvenu: Is it the 10-year-old doing time travel or the fascinating cast for the English-dubbed version? The presence of Natalie Portman as a producer or the mishmash of lush greenery and beautiful futuristic visions?
Wherever you start, Arco looks incredibly promising. Illustrator and graphic novelist Bienvenu makes his feature film debut with this story about friendship—and saving the world. The synopsis says only:
Arco is a dazzling adventure about a 10-year-old boy from a peaceful, distant future who accidentally travels back to the year 2075 and discovers a world in peril. As Arco develops a charming and touching friendship with a young girl named Iris, they band together and along with her trusted robot caretaker Mikki, set out on a quest to get Arco home, while the two children may also be the only ones who can save our planet.
The teaser, below, has no dialogue, but the English dub features the voices of Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Flea (yes, Flea), Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, and Andy Samberg.
The film premiered at Cannes earlier this year to generally quite positive reviews; The Hollywood Reporter said, “Arco roots for a future in which humans do survive. The film aims to inspire action and stave off despair with a reminder that the most powerful tool younger generations can wield is their imagination.”
Bienvenu is also a graphic novelist, and his book System Preference will be published here this fall. Interestingly, as THR notes, that story features a “domestic robot” named Mikki, in whom an archivist stores important cultural data. Mikki the robot also appears in Arco.
Arco is in select theaters November 14th.[end-mark]
