Mandatory Evacuations Issued In California As Massive Blaze Rips Through Wine Country

The scenes coming out of California right now look like something out of an apocalyptic movie. A massive wildfire is burning through Napa County in California, causing thousands of people to evacuate. Currently, the fire is only 10% contained and shows no signs of slowing down. ABC News reported more on the blaze and evacuations: A fast-spreading wildfire in California’s wine country prompted mandatory evacuation orders as firefighters continued to battle the blaze from the ground and air into Monday. The Pickett Fire in Northern California’s Napa County has burned some 6,803 acres since it broke out Thursday, according to the latest update from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. As of midnight Sunday local time, the fire was 11% contained with some 615 structures at threat, CalFire said. The fire broke out around 3 p.m. local time on Thursday near the town of Calistoga, officials said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. In an update Saturday on its website, CalFire said crews have been aided during the nighttime fighting of the fire by night-flying helicopters and drones. Residents of the Western United States have been sweltering in a heat wave that hospitalized some people, with temperatures forecast to hit dangerous levels throughout the weekend in Washington, Oregon, Southern California, Nevada and Arizona. Clay said the weather has moderated since the fire broke out, with Sunday’s high expected to be 94 degrees (34 Celsius). But humidity levels were expected to drop amid increasing winds later Sunday afternoon. “That’s been a driving factor in the afternoons since we’ve seen the fire activity pick up for the last three days,” Clay said, adding that “support from all up and down California has been critical to our efforts.” BREAKING : California Wildfires raging since August 21st have burned over 6,500 acres and are only 11% contained as of Sunday California is cooked under Newsomepic.twitter.com/fb54mOOhNC — Teabagger of Libs (@DemTeabagger) August 25, 2025
