“I Asked The Staff Which Dog Had Zero Adoption Applications, Here Is What Happened…”
Animal shelters are amazing in what they do to care for abandoned, lost, and abused animals. When a dog lands in a shelter, its background might be unknown. Shelters sometimes offer a program where you can “check out a shelter dog for a day trip.” These programs are great for people who love dogs but can’t have one due to apartment rules, work schedules, or any other reason.
Rachel is a woman on a mission. She is working with her local shelter to get dogs noticed and to shill for the dogs who seem to get no attention. With that mission on her mind, she asked to check out a shelter dog for the day who had no applications for adoption pending. They led her right to Miss Betty.
Some types of dogs have a more difficult time connecting with a furever family than others. Betty is one of those breeds, being a mix of some sort of Bully breed. Betty was happy and wagging her tail as soon as the leash went on. She had no clue what was happening yet, but she was happy.
Rachel loaded Betty in the car, where the happy dog rolled and settled in like she owned the back seat. Their first stop was at a park, where they took a long walk, taking in the sights and enjoying the fresh air. There were lots of pets involved. Betty couldn’t seem to get enough. The pair had an amazing day.

After Betty’s Shelter Dog Day Trip
Rachel uses the day trips to get to know the animals so she can help them get placement with a family. They’re a special treat for any shelter dog. For Betty, it was a new lease on life. After Rachel edited and uploaded the video of their day, she shared it on her YouTube channel. Within 24 hours of the video’s posting, it had over 6 million views! It did not take long for that to become 14 million.
While Rachel was editing, the shelter was conducting a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test on Betty. This is a fairly standard genetic test to check for genetic diseases, infectious diseases, or genetic changes in tumors. It is similar to the nasal swab test for COVID in humans. Waiting for the test results means Betty must wait for adoption, but will be available after the test results come back.
In another update video, Rachel had some upsetting news: Betty was really sick after the original video. There was a person on his way to adopt her, but her illness put a hold on it. That man ended up adopting another dog in the shelter.

Betty ended up spending some time in the isolation room. Rachel went to visit her, which meant getting into full personal protective gear. They were able to take a walk in a special isolation yard at the shelter. She is on the mend and was eligible for adoption again.
What Happened Next Proves The Day Trip Program Works
Betty’s adopters have taken her home! When Rachel went to take Betty for a walk, she missed her adopters by about two hours. That meant she was unable to say goodbye.
It will not be surprising if the adopter makes contact with Rachel and they arrange a meeting so she can say goodbye to Betty.

If you can’t have a dog, or just want to spend some quality time with an animal that will offer you unconditional love with no expectation of anything in return (except some pets, hugs, and belly rubs), consider checking out a shelter dog for a day trip.
Please share.
