Campus police and local authorities are searching for the man, but in the meantime, school officials have warned students to shelter in place. A video of the potential gunman was uploaded on X. Officers were working to find the person, who was described only as male. UMass Lowell had issued alerts about an individual who may have a weapon on campus. The alerts sent to the community referred to a search for a person with a weapon near the Riverview Suites residence hall on South Campus. The public was urged to avoid the area as police investigated. Rep. Lori Trahan shared a statement on social media saying she was monitoring the situation: “I’m actively monitoring the alert of a potentially armed individual near UMass Lowell’s South Campus and in touch with local officials. A campus-wide shelter in place order has been issued as officers attempt to find this individual,” University officials said. Lowell Mayor Daniel Rourke confirmed that Massachusetts State Police and FBI officials are providing support. “The City is utilizing all available resources at this time,” Rourke said. In a statement, Massachusetts State Police said troopers “are aware” of a video being circulated that appears to show an armed individual walking near the dorms.
