Alien: Romulus Follow-Up Script Complete, But Fede Álvarez Won’t Return to Direct
He also calls it a sequel, something that a Romulus producer had previously left an open question.

It’s no surprise that 20th Century Studios greenlit another Alien film after the commercial success of 2024’s Alien: Romulus. News on what that upcoming sci-fi horror feature will be about, however, has been sparse.
When the film was released, Fede Álvarez, who directed Romulus and co-wrote the script, told The Hollywood Reporter that “once we finished [Alien: Romulus], we started thinking, ‘What do you think happens when or if they get to Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?’ We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, ‘Oh, that sounds like a sequel.’”
He added in that interview that it was best to wait at least two years before writing a sequel. Flashforward to today, one year later, and Álvarez revealed that he and frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues have written exactly that.
“We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel for Romulus. But I’m going to pass the torch on this one as director,” he told TooFab on the red carpet for Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. “I’m going to produce it, with Ridley Scott, we’re going to produce it together and we’re right now trying to find a new filmmaker to come in.”
He added, “I think that’s usually what has happened, except for Ridley, filmmakers come, you make one and you pass the baton to the next one. But we wrote the story because we really love what we started with Romulus and we want to continue the story. We love the story and now we just want to find a director that really wants to go for the jugular.”
Álvarez’s apparent confirmation that the movie is a direct sequel to the events of Romulus suggests that the creative team decided to commit to that route, even though producer Michael Pruss said back in February 2025 in an interview with ScreenRant that working on the film was in its early days and that it “may not be a direct sequel to Romulus, but it certainly is a part of the existing franchise.”
Given this development, odds are good that we’ll see the return of actors Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. But while the script is apparently done, the project still needs that aforementioned director attached, so it may be a few more months before we get more Alien movie news. [end-mark]
