That enduring enthusiasm made clear there is an appetite for more stories set in this world,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson said in a statement. “Vin and I have partnered many times over the years, and he is a true force in our industry. I’m thrilled to be reuniting with him as he returns to this iconic role, and excited by how advancements in filmmaking technology now allow us to economically deliver a sequel on an even more ambitious scale.” The first film was advertised as an adaptation of Diesel’s personal Dungeons & Dragons campaign, where he played a character called Melkor the Witch Hunter. Caine, whose deal isn’t yet finalized, is expected to once again play the priest, Dolan, who serves as Melkor’s assistant in stopping evil magic stuff. The critical reception for The Last Witch Hunter was far from positive. Its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score is 18 percent, and Theresa Delucci in her Reactor review said it was “not the cheese-tastic, one-liner spouting fantasy movie I came for.” We don’t have details yet on plot, though the end of the 2015 film opened the door for other evil creatures for Melkor to take on. Variety reports that it has been “fast-tracked through development,” so odds are probably good we’ll see The Last Witch Hunter 2 sooner rather than later.
