Jamey Johnson Details How He Proposed To His Now Wife, Brittney, The Second Day He Knew Her: “I Knew From The Beginning”
Jamey Johnson believes in love at first sight.
The great Jamey Johnson stopped by the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk about his time in the Marines, listening to contemporary country music and how he enjoys artists like Morgan Wallen, working from the Cash cabin to create his new album Midnight Gasoline, how he wrote “What A View,” and much more.
We also discussed his recent marriage to Brittney Johnson, whom he had been with for six years before tying the knot earlier this year in Nashville. But there’s a long and entertaining story as to how the couple ended up together, and before she said “I do,” Jamey Johnson says that Brittney initially shot him down:
“She said, ‘No.'”
To be clear, she wasn’t entirely at fault for declining Jamey Johnson’s proposal.
That’s because the “In Color” singer asked her if she wanted to get married on the second day that they knew each other. It certainly seemed like fate played a role in the two crossing paths, but Brittney wasn’t as sure as Jamey was off the bat:
“She said, ‘Not right now.’ I knew from the beginning I wanted to marry her. I knew what she was. She’s just a sweet, down-home, brilliant southern lawyer. We met in Jackson, Mississippi, at the Governor’s inauguration ceremony. It rained that day, an epic rain…
They ended up moving the inauguration ceremony indoors. I was standing up against the wall so the governor and his security detail could get by and Brittney ended up on the wall right beside me.”
Johnson went on to detail their “meet cute,” and explained that he was able to convince Brittney – whom he had just met – to join him and some others for lunch the day after the inauguration. She agreed, and it was afterwards that Jamey somewhat popped the question:
“The next day, we went over to Walker’s Diner with Randy Houser and the governor’s brother Todd. We had lunch, and she came and joined us for lunch. I was walking her to her car when we got done and asked, ‘Can we just go ahead and get married and have some kids, and if it works out, we’ll start dating?’ I don’t know what kind of proposal that was, but I was just letting her know that I already knew.”

If that’s not a shining example of “when you know, you know,” I don’t know what is. And the coolest part? Jamey Johnson was right about them being meant for one another… he was just five years or so early to the proposal.
